National Hermit Week is the venue to encourage solitary activities for creative inspiration, personal development, spiritual growth or sabbatical rest. Celebrated annually June 13-20, it is for anyone anywhere. The event motto is: “Don’t be a loner alone”.

NATIONWIDE, USA (Hermit Central)--National Hermit Week (June 13-20, celebrated annually since 1996) is a fun way to promote opportunities that are best pursued quietly and alone such as resting, reading, painting, praying, writing, thinking, appreciating, creating, etc. It is for whomever wherever. All are encouraged to take time away from their busied and stressful lives to participate.

How Others Have Celebrated

This event idea has been used by teachers and librarians to promote reading, writing and critical thinking skills as well as by counselors as a fun way to encourage time for introspection. It has also been fodder for humorous commentaries in the media over the years, while inspiring others toward creative or spiritual pursuits.

A Word From the Founder

Dr. Eleece Jel, a former corporate educator and academic, is the founder of National Hermit Week and leader of the Worldwide Hermitage Movement. She observes “What started out in the early years as a humorous way to bring attention to the benefits of spending time alone in today's modern chaotic world evolved into something larger with unforeseen sociological and spiritual implications for me and others. I keep National Hermit Week going to encourage people in their hermit quests and to instill a sense of fun in a journey that for some develops into something profoundly life-altering.”

What the Public Should Do

People everywhere are encouraged to use this hermit holiday to take a personalized adventure in solitude. Dr. Jel encourages people to “Discover yourself by journeying within or going off-the-grid. Celebrate the contributions of others who indulged their need to hermit. Whether you seek inner peace, spiritual release or a moment's peace this eight-day week is for you. Our motto: ‘Don’t be a loner alone’.”
